Mining cooperatives

In the context of the broader process of mining reform, the Congolese government has required all artisanal miners to group in cooperatives. Several CEGEMI members have done research on this process.

Jorden De Haan and Sara Geenen wrote an Analysis and Policy Brief on Mining Cooperatives in South Kivu: saviour or extortionist? The brief is available in English and French. It is based on fieldwork carried out by Jorden De Haan in July/August 2015. For more information or a copy of the dissertation, contact him at Jordendehaan@hotmail.com. A summary of his dissertation (English/French) can be found below.

Anuarite Bashizi has done fieldwork in Kalimbi, which resulted in the following article published in Conjonctures Congolaises 2015: Les limites d’une gouvernance par le bas: les logiques des coopératives minières à Kalimbi, with Sara Geenen.

Two of our members have done research on cooperatives from a legal perspective: Prof. Paul Robain Namegabe, Université Catholique de Bukavu, and Christian Bahala, PhD student at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. One of Bahala’s publications can be found here.
